Police enforcing no-scavenging rule

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A third resident was ticketed Thursday for scavenging without a permit.

Sherman N. Wheeler, 58, 192 South St., was ticketed after police observed him picking through garbage on Spalding Street.

A man and woman from High Street were ticketed for scavenging Wednesday on Cottage Street.

City police were directed this week to begin enforcing the no-scavenging provision of the local refuse and recycling law.

Mayor Michael Tucker announced the enforcement Tuesday after receiving complaints from several homeowners regarding scavengers going through their garbage bags and scattering waste on the ground.

Normal refuse set-out limits are lifted through July 12, to allow residents to dispose of items ruined by basement flooding in late June.
