Smith was attempting to get into a car in the parking lot when he saw the police coming and began to run, according to Lockport officer Richard Provenzano, who was in a police car.

”He ran by the car and I was able to dive and tackle him,” said Provenzano, who has been on the force nearly 20 years.

There were two active bench warrants for Smith, who eluded police last July.

Smith, who is listed at 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, did not resist once tackled, but Provenzano’s shirt was torn and he suffered a minor injury.

Smith was wanted for grand larceny and burglary in Lincoln County which is about 30 mies from St. Louis.
