Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A shoplifter was able to escape the grip of a store security guard after a theft attempt at the Bon Ton store Friday on South Transit Road.

Niagara County Sheriff’s deputies said the white m ale was believed to have taken several pieces of jewelry before exiting the store around 4:30 p.m. He was confronted in the parking lot by a store employee and gave back a silver necklace valued at $70, but then shoved the man and fled on foot.

The shoplifter was caught again and another scuffle ensued, deputies said. During the scuffle the suspect wriggled out of the two shirts and jacket he was wearing, then fled again, this time shirtless.

Deputies said the suspect suffered a wound to his face.

The shoplifter's clothing included a white T-shirt with blood on the collar, a black T-shirt with a small amount of blood on it and a black jacket with a green collar.

The clothing items were submitted to the sheriff's office lab for DNA testing.
