Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A city man is facing drunken driving and driving under the influence of drugs charges after being found passed out behind the wheel of his truck in Wheatfield on Saturday night.
Niagara County Sheriff's deputies were called to Lena Drive about 8:45 p.m. for a report of a man slumped over the steering wheel of his running truck. As they arrived, deputies said they spotted the truck, driven by Dennis W. Rohde, backing up and driving away. Rohde pulled into a nearby parking spot where deputies enacted a traffic stop.
Rohde, 39, 77 Hyde Park, denied being slumped over the steering wheel and said he was fine but appeared intoxicated to deputies. He was charged with third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, D.W.I. and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.
A search of his truck reportedly turned up a six-pack of Redd's Apple Ale in the cargo area behind the seats. Two of the bottles were open, one was empty the other was partially consumed.
Deputies also found a tin containing 32 pills identified as xanax. While at the sheriff's office, Rohde admitted to deputies that he had taken an indeterminate amount of xanax pills before driving. He was then brought to Eastern Niagara Hospital, Lockport for blood and urine tests.
Rohde was taken to Niagara County Jail on $250 bail and was released Tuesday. He appeared in court Tuesday.
