Flag holders upended in Hartland cemetery

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Flag holders were upended in Hartland Central Cemetery on Ridge Road last week.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Office fielded a complaint from a caretaker, who said 14 veterans' flag holders were found in a bush Sept. 17 while the cemetery was being landscaped.

The flag holders were pulled out of the ground from various sites in the cemetery, and the screwed-on stakes were removed, the caretaker said. Bronze plaques that go with each flag holder were also discarded into the bush. The flag holders themselves were undamaged, the caretaker said.

The flag holder stakes are valued at $210.

The caretaker said whole flag holders have been taken from the cemetery before, possibly for their scrap metal value.
