KENMORE EAST NOTEBOOK: Owczarzak sets East receiving record

His biggest contribution may come on defense, but Adam Owczarzak will leave Kenmore East as the school’s all-time leading receiver.

Owczarzak caught his 54th career pass last week in a 20-8 victory over cross-town rival Kenmore West, just part of his two-touchdown performance.

“He’s the type of guy who can be quiet, then come up with the big catch,” East coach Matt Chimera said of Owczarzak.

Owczarzak also had an interception, a blocked punt and 61⁄2 tackles against the Blue Devils.

“It’s his experience and the way he moves,” Chimera said, explaining what Owczarzak does well. “I keep going back to that Williamsville East game. If he’s in there, it might have been a different story. He just makes things happen for us on defense.”

n Defensively, Cory Martin was all over the field for the Bulldogs against West, finishing with 12 tackles.

“He had some big hits that really set the tone for us,” Chimera said of Martin.

Also for the Bulldogs, Mike Doherty and Dom Fratterigo forced fumbles, while Jacob Fox and Jon Anthony Wiltberger recorded fumble recoveries. Tim Ingrassia had a sack.

n The Bulldogs travel to Maryvale for a Class A consolation bowl game at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Flyers enter the game at 5-3 on the season, losing to Class A-powerhouses Cheektowaga and Iroquois, as well as Pioneer. Maryvale coach Steve Griffin returned eight starters to his defense at the start of this season.

“They seem to be a tough, physical team,” Chimera said of the Flyers.

n It was East’s first win over West since a 34-18 triumph in 2000.

“We’re real lucky to have that game,” Chimera said. “No matter how the season’s going, it’s always a fun game with the tradition around it.”
