DRINKWALTER: The Dominican adventure

I was never as happy to be back in the USA as I was when our Jet Blue flight came skidding down the runway at the Buffalo airport a few weeks ago. Even if the air controller’s kid might have been the one to usher us in, Jet Blue was our salvation. We had arrived home from “a long strange trip” to the Dominican Republic.

DRINKWALTER: Men vs, women, part II

Last week I wrote about how difficult is to find Mr. or Mrs. Right. I stated, “No wonder men and women are leery while scratching their heads wondering, who’s on first? Who asks whom out on a date?

DRINKWALTER: Valentine’s Day memories

Every year when Valentine’s Day rolls around, I fondly remember the year I took on a group of rambunctious little boys and became their Tiger Cub leader.

DRINKWALTER: Creative gimmicks to take your money

With the economy slipping into collapse faster than a million-dollar home in a southern California mud-slide, there seems to be more creative gimmicks that folks are finding to make money at our expense.

Last week, I began writing about when my husband and I finally quit an on-again, off-again smoking habit for good.

DRINKWALTER: MLK Day 1997 — memories of beating the smoking habit

Martin Luther King’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech still rings through the halls of American universities, Congress and through the hearts of men woman and children who dream of equality and doing the right thing. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his non-violent battle to end racism and segregation. MLK Day became a national holiday in 1986.

DRINKWALTER: Wise words for 2010

Here we are again, coming to the end of another year. This has been quite an unusual and unpredictable year for most of us. Many people have had to learn to live with less. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. The “I want it now” method of spending has somewhat ceased. Those who have bragged for years about all the “stuff” they have acquired are acquiring less and bragging less. That’s not a bad thing either.

DRINKWALTER: It’s peanut brittle time again

Once again, the folks at Lockport First Presbyterian Church are making and selling their famous peanut brittle. The process has been part of church tradition since January 1967. They fire up the old candy kettle, throw open the doors and windows, crank up the Christmas carols and let the magic begin.

DRINKWALTER: Time for the cookie and candy diet to begin

It’s become a tradition for me to share homemade cookies and fudge each year with friends and family members. My friend Donna is a self-proclaimed chocoholic and waits to receive my coveted chocolate fudge while others prefer the peanut butter.

DRINKWALTER: Let the holiday feeding frenzy begin

Let the feeding frenzy begin. How are we supposed to watch our weight when a typical Thanksgiving dinner weighs in at 2000 to 4000 calories? Yikes, aren’t you glad you read this after the fact? Ah, but it’s just the beginning of that wonderful holiday season.
