EDITORIAL: Responsibility falls to students in Wilson case

First off, there is still much that is still unknown in the alleged case of Wilson varsity baseball players hazing junior varsity players. With that being said, it’s only fair that those who have been accused are just accused and not guilty of anything.

With that being said, we do know that those charged are over the age of 16. Which means they are free to make decisions, good or bad, and take responsibility for those decisions.

The debate on when a child becomes an adult comes up all the time with regard to driver’s licenses, drinking age or going to war. It’s safe to say once a young adult turns 16, their decision-making may not be on par with the 40-year-old, but then again there’s many 16 year olds who make better decisions than some 40 year olds. But 16 is still old enough to already know the difference between right and wrong.

The alleged incidents are wrong, bad and illegal on all fronts. A 16-year-old should know that. If they didn’t before, surely they know now. Which makes this all the more timely for parents to teach their children, based on this incident, and those young adults who are old enough, to take notice of an obviously bad decision.

Ultimately, when you’re dealing with juniors and seniors in high school, they are old enough to know how bad of a decision this alleged incident was. It’s not up to the parents, coaches or the bus driver to answer for this bad decision, this is on students old enough to know the difference between right and wrong.
