EDITORIAL: Despite developments, rumors still dominate Wilson case

More still needs to be released in assault case

When something as large as the alleged assault of April 17 involves in a small town like Wilson, it becomes major news all over Western New York. We’re sure it’s a disappointing fact for the Wilson residents and especially those associated with the school district.

But because it has become such big news, which even the Associated Press has picked up, that also means there are still a lot of rumors going around town.

We now know who the charged players are, thanks to court documents. That at least ends the rumors on who was and wasn’t involved and proved the innocence of some players who’s names may have been flying around as an alleged guilty party.

We also know that the coaches have been charged, which ends some of those rumors or some of the questions of their involvement or lack of supervision.

But even after all that was released in Wednesday’s paper, the chatter around town still centers on Wilson incident. There is still a lot of unknown and even more speculation — including other names of residents who may be innocent.

It’s for that reason that those involved with working this case both on the police and school level need to be as forthcoming as possible with the facts. We understand they need to do their due diligence and can’t just release information for the sake of releasing it.

All we’re asking is that the information come out, so that the normally quaint little town on Lake Ontario can get back to exactly that and end the rumors that are still flying around.
