EDITORIAL: Breast Cancer Walk worth attending

Once again this year, walkers will converge on the banks of the Erie Canal for the Mother’s Day Breast Cancer Walk. Each year the walk grows by participants and funds raised, which can only be a good thing, since it raises thousands for Mary’s Room at the American Cancer Society in Amherst.

As most know, the walk was started by Mary Marvin 12 years ago, but she died of breast cancer 10 years ago. The tradition is still alive today, thanks to her sister and dozens of volunteers and sponsors.

It will be held Sunday with registration at 11 a.m. and the walk at 1 p.m.

We all know Mother’s Day is a busy one for families, but if you haven’t made this walk part of your Sunday, maybe this year you can. It’s a tradition that could become part of your family for years and years. Plus, it’s all for a good cause.

Every family has been touched with some sort of cancer. It’s for that reason that many local families should join in the efforts.

Since chemotherapy causes many women to lose their hair, the walk is the sole supporter of the wig room, which maintains an inventory of wigs and turbans while providing dignity to many suffering from cancer.

This year’s walk is in memory of Carol Clapsaddle, Kathy DiCarlo-Pope and Jennifer Lea Esposito who died in 2007. This is a small community. You may know one of those being memorialized; another reason attending the walk would be worth your while.

Even if you don’t walk, there’s enough happening with auctions, entertainment and more. It’s tradition and it’s for a good cause. What more could you ask for in a local event.
