About once a week we’ll find an event that is worth your while and highlight it here. There was a story in Monday’s paper that is worth touting.
Jammies for GIs, a charity that gathers everyday needs for soldiers who are wounded overseas, is having local collections this week. Even though it’s sponsored by the Niagara County Democratic Committee, “it’s a non-political event,” according to Democratic Committee Chairman Dan Rivera.
It shouldn’t be political at all. These are the needs of our soldiers, regardless of party.
Residents may donate items such as: new clothing, including pajamas, sweats, shorts, T-shirts, slippers, underclothes, socks, bathrobes and tear-away pants; toiletries, bath towels and wash cloths; hand-held games, DVDs, books, magazines and crossword puzzles; pre-paid phone cards for calls home; cash to purchase non-donated items; and cards and letters of support.
It’s amazing that in times like this, soldiers would be in need of basic goods like these. Still, it’s the reality of the situation. It’s for that reason that these events are held.
It just so happens, the county-wide event is happening from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday — Armed Forces Day.
Here’s where you can go to make a donation and help a wounded soldier:
• Lockport — UAW Hall, Walnut and Vine streets.
• Niagara Falls — Christoforo Columbo Society, 23rd Street and Pine Avenue.
• North Tonawanda — Johnnie’s Bike Shop, Payne Avenue and Jackson Street.
• Wheatfield — American Legion Hall, Ward Road.
• Lewiston — Colonial Plaza (CVS plaza), Center Street, until 2 p.m. only.
• Youngstown — VFW Hall, Third Street.
