CHEERS
• REEB/WHALEN: Well, we might as well cheer the improved relationship between Starpoint candidate Annmarie Reeb and Superintendent C. Douglas Whalen now, because we’re not sure how long it will last when she officially becomes a school board member. Reeb, who’s taking her third shot at the seat and will win, since only three people are running for three seats, will have to work closely with Whalen on district issues. That’s pretty obvious. “I’m welcoming her,” Whalen said. “Having someone like her serve can only help us. People might see that and think it’s just a line, but that’s how I really feel. I see her trying to make things better.” Let’s hope they can make things better together — and civilly.
JEERS
• HERITAGE DESIGNATION: Isn’t this just how things go in the Falls? On Thursday, President Bush signed into law the Consolidated Natural Resources Act, which officially made a strip of land from Niagara Falls to Youngstown a National Heritage Area. That’s great, right? It would be if a federal appropriations bill had also been passed to fund the program, which is eligible for $10 million over 10 years. When will those funds become available? No one seems to know right now. Once funds do become available, a 17-person commission will have three years to craft a management plan for the area. Maybe we’re just being a bit impatient here, but it looks like we’ve got a ways to wait on this one.
• CAMDEN’S COFFEE: There’s a lot of unknown surrounding the Camden’s Coffee and Creamery leaving or being asked to leave its Newfane location. No doubt, there’s things that have not come out in the wash, yet, because both the coffee house owners and the landlord are pretty tight-lipped, but something seems awry. Some say Camden’s was trying to sell already, even before being asked to leave by Laura Rutland. The Camden owners say Rutland found someone willing to pay more, so they got the boot. That’s the chance they took without a long-term lease, but it does seem a little shady and downright cruel to kick a local business out. Again, if that is what happened.
• I-190 GAWKERS: To all of those on the side of the I-190 while a despondent man has a gun to his head: next time, if there’s ever a next time you’re in the same place as a huge police incident, stop your gawking and get out of the police department’s way. And if you brought your kids to watch, your nuts. Luckily the incident ended without tragedy, but police had a difficult time ensuring that would be the case due to the crowds of people that came out to watch.
