EDITORIAL: Another great visit from workcampers

They took a year off, but the workcamp kids are back, this time from the Reach program. The mission is the same, though, helping those in need of home improvements around Eastern Niagara County.

It’s a faith-based mission, with organizational help from Lockport’s St. Johns. We’re glad it’s back, since all of us know how big a help these young adults are as they help improve the building stock in Eastern Niagara.

Plus the respect these kids show is unbelievable. Their faith and volunteerism is unmatched.

They are traveling from town to town, many on their own dime, doing a lot of hard work and sleeping in classrooms at Lockport High School. How many of you would do that now? Or even at their age?

The benefits are great, plus the media exposure may get the local residents thinking about taking up the same kind of work either on their own homes or as a volunteer service.

Some people don’t have the means, so it’s good that there are such caring organizations out there willing to donate time and resources, but we also don’t want the workcamp crews coming to town, just to clean and repair places that are in disrepair thanks to a more than able owners.

The Reach Workcamp members will be in town a few more days, so there’s still more work to be done, but we’re already thinking the local churches should sign up for this type of group visit again next year.
