Albany man visits WNY-based hockey legend

NORTH TONAWANDA — An Albany-area man was the guest of hockey legend Scotty Bowman when the Stanley Cup made what seems like its nearly annual trek to Bowman’s Amherst home.

Eric Martin of Greenport, in Greene County, has crossed paths with Bowman numerous times over the years, according to the (Catskill) Daily Mail. Martin wrote a congratulatory letter to Bowman after his Blackhawks won the most recent Stanley Cup (Bowman’s 12th as a coach and executive), and the Chicago senior adviser of hockey operations invited Martin to Western New York over Labor Day weekend to catch up and view the trophy, the paper reported.

“He’s an amazing man and a brilliant hockey mind,” Martin told the paper. “We became good friends, and I love him dearly. I would do anything for him if he needed it, but he’s always the one helping me out in some way.”

The two men met during a hockey camp in the 1980s in Lake Placid, the paper reported.

A recent national magazine story on hometown bakeries featured one of Niagara County’s most well-known locales.

DiCamillo Bakery was included in the story that ran in the American Profile magazine. Owner Michael DiCamillo said that the Italian scaletta bread has been a staple for the bakery’s 90-year existence, as have been other treats such as cannolis and biscotti, which are sold at stores such as Nieman Marcus.

“Part of our success has come from the tenacity of the owners,” DiCamillo told the magazine. “I remember lean times in the 1950s when everything was supermarket bakeries and Wonder Bread. Now, luckily, the world is coming around to us. All of a sudden, it’s quite fashionable and desirable to have a handmade loaf of bread.”
