Lockport, Starpoint post impressive swim wins

Basketball Lions roll by visiting Ken East; Newfane girls win thriller.

Boys varsity swim teams from Lockport and Starpoint remained undefeated in their respective leagues with victories on Tuesday night.
Head coach John Sullivan's Lions all but put a lock on the Niagara Frontier League championship with a 114-71 victory over Grand Island. The Lions improved to 10-0 in the NFL, while the Vikings dropped to 8-2 in the league.
In Pendleton, head coach Tim Menges' Spartans improved to 6-0 in the Erie County Inter-scholastic Conference with a 109-59 victory over visiting Iroquois.
Seniors Scott Guyton and Derek Secord were double individual winners in Lockport's win over Grand Island.
Guyton won both the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.20) and 100 butterfly (:56.93), while Secord touched first in both the 50 freestyle (:22.37) and 100 free (:50.87). 
Other LHS winners were junior Mike Dmochowski (100 back) and sophomores Magnus Cleveland (100 breast) and Paul Fredrickson (diving).
Lockport also swept the meet's three relays with seniors Guyton, Shawn Moore and Bryan Wojcinski joining Cleveland to win the 200 medley relay; Secord, Wojcinski and sophomores Austin Hinton and Cole Twomey winning the 200 free relay; and Secord, Hinton, Wojcinski and Guyton taking the 400 free relay.
Ian Eisenberger was a double winner (200 free, 500 free) for the Vikings (8-2 NFL).
In Pendleton, the Spartans were led by double winners Alec Toth (200 free, 500 free) and Rob Luckman (50 free, 100 back).
Other individual winners for Starpoint were Andrew Luckman (200 IM) and Lester Wagner (100 butterfly).
Starpoint won two out three relays as well with Andrew Luckman, Rob Luckman, Brandon Smith and Drew Howard winning the 200 medley relay and Toth, Howard, Andrew Luckman and Tony Zanation claiming the 200 free relay.
Robert Coatsworth (100 free) and Joshua Jansen (100 breast) earned wins for Iroquois.
Starpoint has five more league meets left in the regular season, Menges said.
Roy-Hart 99, Barker 70
MIDDLEPORT — In a battle of the Niagara-Orleans League's top two swim teams, coach Bruce Matthews' Roy-Hart squad made a statement with a convincing victory over Barker on Tuesday evening.
Nich DiNardo led Roy-Hart with victories in the 200 freestyle (2:01.94) and 500 freestyle (5:37.23), while the Rams' Roy Phipps emerged victorious in the 50 freestyle (23.54) and 100 freestyle.
Lyle Wagner won the 100 butterfly for Roy-Hart at 57.02, and Tanner Rees took the 200 individual medley at 2:32.50.
For Barker, Tim Flint won the 100 breaststroke (1:14.57), and Alex Goodlander won the 100 backstroke. Roy-Hart won all three rleay races.
Roy-Hart remains unblemished in league competition at 6-0, while Barker falls to 4-2 in the league. The Raiders' only two league losses have come at the hands of Roy-Hart.
Newfane 95, Medina 71
NEWFANE — Medina's Chase Pecoraro emerged as a double winner with victories in the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke, but the Mustangs dropped a Niagara-Orleans League decision on Tuesday evening at Newfane.
Pecoraro swam the 200 freestyle in 2:11, and swam the 100 backstroke in 1:10.
Medina's Austin Heil won the 500 freestyle at 6:14, and the team of Heil, Pecoraro, Derek Donley and Austin Brown won the 200 freestyle relay.
Medina falls to 2-4 in league competition, while Newfane improves to 4-2.
Roy-Hart 95, Barker 74
MIDDLEPORT — Boosted by the efforts of superstar senior Calee Coleman, the Lady Rams edged past Barker in a Niagara-Orleans League swim meet on Tuesday evening.
Coleman won the 200 freestyle (2:12.83) and 100 backstroke (1:12.23), while contributing to team wins in the 200 medley relay (2:11.56) and 400 freestyle relay.
Roy-Hart's Lindsay Yates won the 50 freestyle (27.76) and 100 freestyle, while Courtney VanBuren won the 500 freestyle (6:23.37) and Melissa Zakrzewski took the 100 butterfly at 1:13.92.
Barker's Brooke Targus won the 200 individual medley at 2:39.00, and the Lady Raiders' Hayley Richbart won the 100 breaststroke at 1:23.01.
Roy-Hart improves to 5-1 in league competition, while Barker falls to 3-2-1.
Newfane 106, Medina 64
NEWFANE — Lady Panther swimmers won all eight individual events and all three relays, as Newfane rolled past Medina in a Niagara-Orleans League meet on Tuesday evening.
Newfane remains undefeated in league competition at 6-0, while Medina falls to 1-4-1 in the N-O.
Under the guidance of coach Mary Dooley, the Lady Mustangs return to action Thursday in a home contest against Akron. Start time is slated for 4:30 p.m.
Lockport 69, Ken East 40
LOCKPORT — Lions senior forward and UB bound diamond star Charlie Sobieraski poured in a game-high 19 points and added 13 rebounds to spark head coach Dave Gilson's Lions (5-1 NFL, 6-3 overall) to victory on Wednesday night.
Mo Townsend added 17 points for LHS and senior Ryan Lawrence chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds.
A 21-5 second quarter was the difference in the Lions' Den.
Adam Geib led the Bulldogs (1-5 NFL) with 10 points.
Barker 72, Roy-Hart 47
BARKER — A 29-11, third-quarter spurt was the difference in Barker on Tuesday night as head coach Dave Carson's team improved to 4-0 in the N-O and are 8-0 overall.
Mitch Luckman led the Raiders with a game-high 26 points. Fellow junior Chris Sweeney added 18 points and senior all-everything Jake Haight chipped in with 11.
Alex Stoddard topped the Rams (3-2 N-O) with 12 points. Fellow senior Cody Breedlove added 10 points.
“I think difference in the game was the third quarter — which was a big quarter for Sweeney and Luckman,” Carson said.
“Luckman had nine points with two threes and Sweeney had 11 points with three, three-pointers in that quarter. That was a good third quarter for the Raiders.”
Albion 65, Newfane 64
ALBION — Josh Kneeland led Newfane with 29 points and 14 rebounds, but Albion eked out a narrow victory in a Niagara-Orleans League contest on Tuesday evening.
Sean Costello added 17 for the Panthers, while Nathan Aurenhamer netted 11. Kneeland had a shot from eight feet to win the game at the buzzer, but it did not fall.
Des Blackmon led Albion with 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Ryan Fannin added 15 points and 11 boards for the Purple Eagles. Austin Loyd netted 13 points for Albion.
Newfane jumped out to a 39-33 lead at halftime, before the Purple Eagles came roaring back with a 19-10 run in the third quarter and held on at the finish.
Albion improves to 2-4 in league play, while Newfane falls to 2-4.
Lockport 61, Ken East 47
TOWN OF TONAWANDA — Junior forward Alyssa Wagner had a game-high 20 points and added a dozen rebounds as head coach Karen Catalano's Lady Lions improved to 5-1 in the NFL and are 5-3 overall.
Gretta Dry added 14 points and 6 steals for the winners.
Kiaja O'Neil topped the Lady Bulldogs with 17 points.
Wilson 47, Medina 17
WILSON — Using a strong defensive presence, the Lakewomen jumped out to a 30-9 halftime lead and cruised to a stress-free victory over the Lady Mustangs.
"We played great defensively," Wilson coach Brian Baker said. "We got out in transition well, got a nice lead at the half, and from there we were pretty much set."
Allie Bubar led Wilson with 13 points, 11 of which came before halftime. Dana Smith added 10 points for the Lakewomen, while Emily Lasher had nine. 
Newfane 55, Albion 53
NEWFANE — Tuesday's battle of N-O front-runners in the Blue Zone was everything it was billed to be, including the dramatic finish, as Newfane's Claire Puff sank a runner in the lane with just six seconds left to win it for head coach Eric Klumpp's Lady Panthers (5-1 N-O, 7-3 overall).
The Lady Purple Eagles dropped to 4-2 in the league and 5-5 overall.
Brooke Horning netted a game-high 26 points with three tres for the winners. Horning had 29 points with 7 tres last Friday night. Paige Emborsky added 10 points with a pair of tres for Newfane. Puff had eight rebounds, 7 steals and 6 assists for the Lady Panthers.
Chanyce Powell topped Albion with 22 points. Kelsey Soule added 16.
Barker 47, Roy-Hart 37
MIDDLEPORT — Caitlyn Mason led the Lady Raiders with 16 points, while strong inside presence Julia Atwater added 11. Barker improves to 4-1 in league play, 6-2 overall, while Roy-Hart drops to 1-5 in the league, 2-7 overall.
"We got a lot of good looks early, but we just weren't making shots," said Barker coach Jeff Costello. "We knocked down a few in the second quarter to get going, and we gave them some problems in the second half with our pressure."
Emma Lindke and Becky Harnish led Roy-Hart with nine points apiece, while Brianna Lewandowski added eight for the Lady Rams.
Starpoint 55, WSE 41
WEST SENECA — Brock Kroening scored 21 points and Christine Nodine added 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Lady Spartans, who improved to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in ECIC II.
It was the fifth straight game the two — both sophomores — have each scored in double digits.
Lockport 60, St. Francis 35
Kyle Brown led Lockport with 12 points as head coach Trait Smith's team improved to 6-1 this season.
James Williamson chipped in with 8, Dorian Byrd added 7, Kyliek Bembo 6 and Devin Leatherman and A.J. Wertman both chipped in with 5 points apiece for Lockport.
“It was a great defensive effort by all,” coach Smith said.
Lew-Port 6, Lockport 1
PENDLETON — At Brad Angelo Lanes on Tuesday, Tyler Rostwitalski bowled a 237-634 and Liam Donovan added a 211-603 for the Lancers (6-2 NFL).
Lew-Port won the pin count, 3,460 to 3,227.
JJ Ritz led the Lions (1-7 NFL) with a 209-579.
Lockport 6, Lew-Port 1
PENDLETON — Lauren Pieroni led the Lady Lions (4-4 NFL) with a 233-660. Lockport won the pin copunt, 2,919 to 2,469 win. 
Devan Maglio rolled a 214-575 for the Lady Lancers (0-8 NFL).
