Local ADs are scrambling to reschedule sports postponements

LOCKPORT —

A Lockport High School trainer was asked this week whether wet, muddy playing conditions on Lockport fields have resulted in a rise in injuries from previous years.
Her reply was that Lockport teams haven't been outside long enough this spring to make that assessment.
Such is the current state of Lockport's unplayable athletic fields in the second week of April — a mixture of grass and soupy mud rendered useless by a late 2013-14 winter, melting snow and persistent rain.
While other local school districts in recent years have invested in state-of-the-art, artificial turf fields that have allowed their teams to practice outdoors and start playing games well before others, including this year, LHS spring sports athletes have spent the better part of the last month cooped up in small gyms dreaming of dry, green grass and some sun.
"If you take a look at the high school scores and reports from the last few weeks, the only teams in Western New York that are consistently playing right now are the teams that have turf fields," said Lockport's veteran athletics director Patrick Burke, a former state AD of the Year.
Several Niagara Frontier League baseball, softball, tennis and even lacrosse matches have already been postponed by Burke and other area athletics directors, who must then scramble to find open dates, locations and officials to reschedule games to accommodate both schools. Multiply that by the large number of postponements already logged this spring and the number of spring sports there are and you can see the dilemma facing schools with grass fields this season.
Almost every Lockport game last week was cancelled. This week's slate of games is down to a handful late this week — but those are likely to be postponed as well.
