Young, but talented

Baseball Lions looking positively towards the immediate future

LOCKPORT — Young, but loaded with talent, the Lockport baseball Lions are looking to make a lot of noise in the Niagara Frontier League this season.

Head coach Steve Styrzo’s team is coming off an 11-3 runner-up season in the NFL a year ago.

Among the baseball Lions lost to graduation are their starting pitcher Dave Shufelt. Leading the blue and gold in 2012 are their three senior captains, Rob Arlington, Nick DiMartile and Nate Schneider. Lockport’s remaining 11 players on their roster are underclassmen.

“We’re young, but we’ve got a lot of young talent,” Arlington said. “As long as we continue to work hard and communicate as a team, we’ll be good.”

Arlington, a right-hander, is among several pitchers who will see action on the hill this spring. Other hurlers include sophomore right handers Noah VanDenBosch and Charlie Sobieraski and lefthanders junior Alex Weaver and sophomore Brad Wroblewski.

Behind the plate is sophomore Dan Bronson, who was the varsity football Lions’ starting quarterback last fall.

DiMartile, in centerfield, is coming off an outstanding season in 2011 when he was named to the NFL First Team and the All-Western New York Honorable Mention squad. He also had big seasons in boys volleyball and basketball. Schneider has been an all-star volleyball player for the Lions the last three seasons and sits among the school’s top all-around athletes.

“We’re going to get a good look at our younger guys over the next couple of non-league games and we’ll see how far they can go,” Styrzo said.

Rounding out the Lions’ roster are juniors Mike Bouchard, Will Diebel and Casey Domski; sophomores Kyle Covell and Colin Dougherty; and freshman Tyler Fraass.

The Lions have two more non-league games scheduled next week. At 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, they host Williamsville North at Outwater Park, then they play at Albion at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, before hosting Wilson at noon on Friday.

Lockport opens up its NFL slate at 4:45 p.m. on April 17 against Niagara Falls at Outwater Park. Other home NFL contests, all at Outwater and all 4:45 p.m. contests, are April 23 (Ken West), April 30 (North Tonawanda), May 2 (Grand Island), May 7 (Kenmore East), May 10 (Lewiston-Porter) and May May 14 (Niagara-Wheatfield). One other non-league home contest pits Lockport against Orchard Park at noon on April 21.

The Lions close out their season on the road with 4:45 p.m. NFL contests at NT (May 16) and at Grand Island (May 17).
