Dry breaks LHS goal scoring record

Late goal gives feisty GI tie with Lockport.

Lockport sophomore Gretta Dry has set the single-season goal-scoring record for Lady Lions girls varsity soccer.
Dry's two goal effort last Friday in a 3-0 victory at Kenmore West and another tally in Tuesday's 1-1 tie against visiting Grand Island gives Dry 34 tallies this season. The old record of 31 goals in a single season was set by Kelly (Stevens) Matschke in her sophomore season in the fall of 1992. Matschke finished with 113 career goals — the current LHS all-time girls soccer record.
“I found out that I broke the (single-season) record on Saturday morning at Homecoming,” Dry said. “I thought it was amazing. I want to thank the whole team because I could never have done it by myself. It's a team record.”
Lady Lions head coach MIke Finnerty said he was proud of Dry's individual accomplishment and also that of his team, which clinched its second straight Niagara Frontier League championship with a tie against the visiting league runner-ups (9-2-2 NFL, 11-2-2 overall) who still have one NFL game left to play. With the win, defending league-champion Lockport finished undefeated (14-0) in the NFL and 16-0 overall.
“It's fantastic. I'm really proud of Gretta. A lot of people have helped make this happen and today was just icing on the cake,” Finnerty said. “It was a rough, physical game, I don't think we played our best game, but we ended up with a tie and clinched the NFL championship. We had a few injuries today, so now we're going to concentrate on getting healthy for sectionals.”
Added Dry, “I think it's amazing. Winning the league title two years in a row has turned the girls soccer program upside down.”
Dry and senior standout Jill Golding were two of several Lady Lions who were injured in the hard-fought contest. Dry suffered a fat lip in a collision, while Golding twisted her ankle.
