It's an all N-O B-2 final on Sunday

Baker's Dozen downs Southwestern in Thursday B-2 girls hoops semifinal

BUFFALO —

It's going to be an all Niagara-Orleans League girls basketball final in Section VI Class B-2, as Wilson and Akron earned semifinal wins at Kenmore West on Thursday night.
Head coach Brian Baker's top-seeded Lakewomen (18-2) earned a 33-27 victory over No. 5 Southwestern in Thursday night's late semifinal contest. No. 6 Akron downed No. 7 Falconer, 34-27 in the earlier B-2 semi, also played at Ken West. Sunday's B-2 girls hoops final is a 7 p.m. start at Buffalo State College.
“It was a low-scoring game in the first half between two similar teams that play aggressive man-to-man defenses,” Baker said. “We've played them three out of the past four years and this was basically the same team. We knew we had to be prepared.”
Both teams started out slowly on the neutral court, but Wilson led 5-4 after one quarter and the games tied at halftime at 11-11.
A 22-16 second half was the difference as senior stalwart Emily Lasher topped the Lakewomen with 11 points, adding 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
“We came out in the second half and played real strong, getting some steals and layups,” Baker said, as his team came out with a game-deciding 8-0 run in the third quarter.
Wilson seniors Allie Bubar and Kayle Stoelting added 9 points apiece for the winners. Bubar also had 5 rebounds and 5 steals, while Stoelting added 5 boards.
Alex Sullivan topped the Lady Trojans (11-7) with  a game-high 16 points.
The good news for Baker is that his team already has two wins over Akron in N-O action earlier this year. Wilson beat the Lady Tigers by scores of 43-28 and 39-13 and finished the N-O season as undefeated champions.
Three's a charm for one of this area's finest hardwood head coaches.
“We'll have to prepare really hard for Akron,” Baker said. “They're going to be ready and Butler's a great coach.”
