All the marbles

Lakewomen meet Warriors today for overall B hoops title

WILSON —

They've seen each other on the hardwood once before in 2013-14 — barely, and without some of their top players — but that was just a Christmas break scrimmage and this time it's for all the marbles and an opportunity to represent Section VI in the state tournament.
Head coach Brian Baker's Wilson Lakewomen will take on coach Jay Hall's Tonawanda Lady Warriors at 5 p.m. today in the Class B Girls Basketball Championship Game at Buffalo State College's Alumni Arena.
The winner advances to the state Far West Regional at 11 a.m. Saturday at Finger Lakes Community College against the Section V (Rochester area) Class B champion. The winner of that game advances to the prestigious state “Final Four” March 14-16 at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, the site of Lockport's Class AA girls hoops title win in 1994.
Class B-2 champion Wilson (19-2) is fresh off Sunday's 46-20 victory over Akron in the B-2 title game at Buff State. Tonawanda (16-4) ran away from Bennett, 62-31, to claim the B-1 championship on Sunday at the home of the Bengals.
“We did a little bit of film work then I got them in the gym. They've got good guards and they're athletic,” Baker said Monday after putting his team through a light workout. “We were focused today taking care of the lttle things on our end and having a good defensive effort.”
The Lakewomen are hoping to use senior Emily Lasher as a catalyst both on the court and on her birthday.
Baker said his team celebrated Lasher's birthday with a party this week. “Every year, she always says we never get to play past her birthday. Hopefully, we'll get her the win today,” Baker said.
Lasher and senor guard Allie Bubar canned 18 points apiece against Akron, but expect them to look down low often today at senior center Dana Smith against a smaller team.
