Purple Eagles are Purple People Eaters

Albion blanks Barker/Roy-Hart, 32-0, in VI football opener

MIDDLEPORT —

Turnovers were costly for Barker/Roy-Hart in Friday night’s Section VI football opener against visiting Albion in a Class B North contest.
The Purple Eagles broke open a tight, defensive battle in the first half with a couple of sophomore-to-sophomore long distance touchdown passes from quarterback Kyle Smith to Trey Hart and never looked back, winning big, 32-0.
“Getting that first win under our belt was important. I lost two nights of sleep thinking about their quarterback, Jake Haight. He’s such a great athlete and competitor He’s a three-sport athlete and the fact that we could keep him somewhat contained was a positive, but he’s a phenomenal athlete,” said Albion head coach Tony Osburn.
Under warm, partly cloudy skies at Bruno Pacini Field, the teams traded possession several times in the early going. The Purple Eagles finally starting moving towards midfield, but back-to-back sacks by Barker/Roy-Hart juniors Dillon Mangan (12 tackles) and Joshua Mead (9 tackles) put a stop to that drive and the first quarter ended scoreless.
Albion opened the scoring 50 seconds into the second quarter when Smith (4 for 7 passing, 93 yards, 2 TDs) heaved a long pass to a streaking Hart down the left sideline. Hart caught the well-thrown ball in stride and raced into the end zone. the 2-point conversion run failed, but the visitors led 6-0.
Fumblitis set in after that with both teams coughing it up.
Led by athletic senior quarterback Haight (11 carries 41 yards rushing, 2-for-10, 21 yards passing), the Rams drove into Purple Eagles territory, but fumbled the ball away. Two plays later, in a replay of the first TD, Smith threw another bomb and hit Hart in stride again, this time for a 45-yard score. The conversion pass failed, but the visitors led 12-0 with 8:32 left in the second quarter.
