Pollock third at sectionals

Lockport eighth grader qualifies for state meet in the 50


The future is big and bright for the Lockport High School swim team with several exceptional performances turned in at Friday’s sectional finals by Lady Lions underclassmen.
Eighth graders Katie Pollock and Julia LaRose had outstanding finishes at Friday’s finals at the Erie Community College Flickinger Center.
Pollock placed third in both the 50-yard freestyle (:24.56) as well as the 100 free (:54.55). Her time in the 50 qualified her for the annual girls state meet, slated in two weeks. Clarence senior Dina Rommel placed first in the 50 free in 23.8 seconds, followed by Pioneer senior Yvonne Isaacs in 24.19 seconds. The 100 free was won by Clarence senior Rebecca Anthone in :52.54, followed by runner-up Isaacs in :53.95.
Pollock was also a member of Lockport’s state-bound 200 free relay quartet, along with senior Roserita DiMillo and juniors Elizabeth Connolly and Kristina Connolly. Lockport’s fantastic foursome placed fourth in Friday’s finals in 1:42.12. Clarence won the race in 1:37.48, followed by OP in 1:38.80 and Southwestern in 1:41.56.
Lockport’s 200 medley relay quartet of DiMillo, junior Hana Snow, sophomore Sarah Yenson and eighth grader Megan Tatro placed 15th in 2:01.45.
LaRose earned a fourth-place finish overall in the morning’s diving finals, posting 335.20 points for fourth and was followed in fifth place by LHS senior Brianna Darnell with 333.15 points. The diving champion was Orchard Park’s Morgan Wellenzohn (395.25). She was followed by Iroquois’ Julie Coomer (349.05) in second and Cheektowaga’s Joelle Galante (337.40) in third.
Meanwhile, DiMillo placed 20th in the 200 individual medley finals, touching in 2:27.59, then saved her best for last, placing fifth in the 100 breaststroke finals in 1:10.75.
Lady Lions junior Elizabeth Connolly placed sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:57.31), won by Orchard Park sophomore Andrea Ernst (1:50.66); and seventh in the 500 free finals in 5:15.26, won by Clarence senior Sydney Modeas in 4:56.46.
Also for coach Larissa McKenna Lady Lions, Kristina Connolly placed 23rd in the 100 butterfly finals in 1:05.72 and 24th in the 100 backstroke finals in 1:09.28.
Starpoint’s 200 medley relay team placed 12th in the finals. Senior Elizabeth Winston, sophomore Kennedy Burns and freshmen Jessica Sacco and Lily-Katherine Miller finished in 1:59.58. The Lady Spartans’ 200 free relay quartet of Miller, Sacco, Burns and senior Kay Ritchie was 12th as well in 1:47.75.
Sacco went on to place 14th in the 200 IM finals in 2:22.55 and 15th in the 100 breast (1:15.39), Miller was 23rd in the 100 free (:58.86); and Burns was 19th in the 500 free (5:37.23).
