Lockport/Ken East strike cancer out

Rain holds off long enough to get in Monday's special game at LHS

LOCKPORT —

Niagara Frontier League varsity softball players from Lockport and Kenmore East high schools participated Monday in the second-annual Strike Cancer Out contest at LHS.
Former LHS player Amanda Plotner, who recently lost her mother to cancer, threw out the ceremonial first pitch on the Locust Street diamond, with dozens of fans in attendance from both schools. A post-game party was held in the LHS gymnasium with deserts provided by parents and pizza donated by Sunny’s.
Half of proceeds generated at the Niagara Frontier League game will be donated to the American Cancer Society and half to Niagara Hospice.
Lockport players accumulated more than 400 pledges of support for the event, as did local busineses, including Molinaro’s.
Megan Schneider earned the win in the circle as the Lady Lions (4-3 NFL, 6-5 overall) came from behind late to post a 4-2 victory. She scattered six hits, fanned five and allowed no walks.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, singles by Allie Cavagnaro, Kelly Anderson, Shannon Krywcun and Schneider produced three runs.
For Ken East (2-5 NFL), second baseman Chelsea Masich was 2-for-3.

PENDLETON — Back to their familiar winning form, the Lady Spartans got a strong game from winning pitcher Ashley Owens, who hurled the complete-game victory with five strikeouts and allowing just one earned run.
At the plate, Brianna Clark led the way going 3-for-4 with a home run, triple and double. Lady Spartans head coach Joe Hill said Brianna’s homer was the first ever over the Starpoint fence, traveling a distance of 225-feet plus. She finished with three RBIs on the day.
Also getting three hits for Starpoint (12-1 overall, 5-1 ECIC II) were sophomores Madison Clark and Allison Block.
