Sophomore southpaw Jen Krieger tossed a complete-game victory in the circle Thursday as the Lockport Lady Lions defeated visiting North Tonawanda, 19-4, earning their first win of the 2013 Niagara Frontier League softball season.
Krieger scattered eight hits, fanned two and walked two for head coach Julie Kwoka's Lady Lions (1-2 NFL). The Lady Jacks dropped to 0-3 in the NFL.
“She kept the ball down and we played well defensively behind her,” Kwoka said. “It was a little windy, but Jen was able to keep the ball down and get lot of ground balls.”
The Lady Lions got an early-season nominee for Defensive Play of the Year in the top of the sixth inning. An NT batter smacked a triple and tried to stretch it into a home run, but a perfectly executed 8-to-4-to-3-to-2 relay (sophomore centerfielder Delaney Fragale to sophomore second baseman Angela Sammarco to sophomore first baseman Alyssa Wagner to senior catcher Kelly Anderson), cutting her down at the plate.
Offensively, the Lady Lions were led by senior Shannon Krywcun, who had three hits, scored three runs and drove home five runs. Sophomore Jordyn Kwoka and Anderson added three hits apiece. Wagner finished with two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Next up, the Lady Lions play at Kenmore East at 4:45 p.m. today.
Barker 10, Albion 9
BARKER — Down by four in the bottom of the seventh, head coach Shannon McCracken's Lady Raiders scored five runs in their final at-bat to earn their first league victory of the season.
Junior catcher Brooke Targus' two-out, two-run single was the game-winner for Barker (1-2 N-O, 1-4). Brooke Bodine and Destiny Hillman got the inning started with base hits.
Hillman pitched six innings and scattered five hits with five strikeouts. Sophomore Kelsey Blackley fanned one in one inning of relief.
Barker smacked 11 hits total, as Bodine finished with three, while Targus and Abby Heitzenrater added two hits apiece.
Sarah Papponeti and Erika Edwards both had two hits for the Lady Purple Eagles (2-2 N-O).
Newfane 7, Medina 2
NEWFANE — Katie Shaw hurled a three-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Lady Panthers improved to 3-0 in N-O action.
Jamie Kerwin had a double and single and Olivia Littman two hits to lead the Newfane attack. Second baseman Gabby Sinnitt turned a double play to highlight the defense for the Lady Panthers.
Olivia Hermann, Jenn Molisani and Jessica Rosenbeck each had a hit for Medina (1-2 N-O).
Roy-Hart 15, CSAT 0
MIDDLEPORT — Brianna Walker hurled a no hitter with nine strikeouts to lead Roy-Hart to a 15-0 victory over visiting CSAT.
Walker and Taylor Fry both had four hits to spark the Lady Rams (2-0 N-O) at the plate.
CSAT dropped to 0-4.
Lockport 16, NT 6
NORTH TONAWANDA — Lockport southpaw Brad Wroblewski was the winning pitcher, tossing four innings, getting six strikeouts with two walks, allowing just two hits. Fellow LHS junior Rhys Vanbourgondien hurled the final three frames in relief.
At the plate, Wroblewski helped his own cause going 3-for-4. Junior infielder Charlie Sobieraski added a two-run double for head coach Steve Styrzo's Lions (2-1 NFL).
Also for the visiting blue and gold, junior Colin Dougherty was 2-for-5 at the plate.
Taylor Mellott was one of the few bright spots for the Lumberjacks (1-2 NFL), going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored.
Next up, the Lions play at Lewiston-Porter at 4:45 p.m. Monday.
Medina 17, Newfane 8
NEWFANE — Tyler Colonna had a run producing double and an RBI single for Medina (3-1 N-O).
Adam Hoot picked up the win on the mound allowing four hits with four strikeouts in four innings of work. The Panthers dropped to 1-3.
Starpoint 13, Will East 4
PENDLETON — The struggling Spartans offense came alive, led by Zach Monell (2-for-4, double, 2 RBIs), Austin Owens (1-for-3, double, 3 RBIs), Andrew Rankie (2-for-5, double, 4 runs) and Brett Guay (2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBIs).
Austin Speaker earned the win on the hill, allowing two earned runs and striking out five in 4 1/3 innings of work.
Alex O'Donnell shut the door late, striking out three and allowing only one hit in 2 2/3 innings for Starpoint (5-3, 1-2 ECIC II).
Medina, Albion and Akron opened their 2013 Niagara-Orleans League track and field seasons Thursday with sweeps over Royalton-Hartland, Wilson and Newfane, respectively.
Medina won the boys' meet, 107-34, and the girls competition, 72-65.
Forrest Harper was a triple winner in the 100, 200 and high jump and Nick Zagmester doubled in the 1600 and 3200 to lead the Medina boys squad.
Clayton Smith was a double winner in the shot put and discus for Roy-Hart, which also got wins by Kyle Shanahan (100 high hurdles), Jared Hinskon (400 intermediate hurdles) and Ben Werth (pole vault).
Emma Lindke was a triple winner for Roy-Hart's girls in the 100 high hurdles, 400 intermediate hurdles and the high jump as Paige Flynn doubled in the 100 and 200 sprints and Liz Offhaus in the shot put and discus.
Visiting Albion beat Wilson in the boys' mee, 91-50, and the girls' meet, 90-50.
Marquise Riddick was a triple winner in the 110 hurdles, 400 hurdles and triple jump for the Albion boys which also got double wns from Jacob Squicciarini (100, 200) and Colby Baney (800, 1,600) as well as a winning vault of 13-0 by Justyn Haines in the pole vault.
Mike Patterson was a double winner for Wilson in the long jump and high jump.
In Akron, the Tigers beat the Panthers, 88-53, and the Lady Tigers bested the Lady Panthers, 104-37.
Louis Henley tripled in the 400 hurdles, long jump and triple jump and Russell Catalano in the 100, 200 and 400 to lead Akron.
Josh Conrad also doubled for Akron in the 1,600 and 3,200, as did Luke Klimchuk in the shot put and discus.
Jena Henley doubled in the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles, Paige Buscaglia in the 100 and 400 and Molly Gorski in the 200 and long jump to lead the way for the Akron girls.
Kelly Bochnewitch doubled in the 1,500 and 3,000 for Newfane.

Luke Sciandra and Nick Guay earned Lockport's only point of the match Thursday at first doubles. Sciandr and Guay defeated Jared Donaldson and Ryan Taylor of the Lancers, 6-1, 6-2.
The loss was Lockport's first of the season as head coach Dave Shambach's team dropped to 2-1 in the NFL.
Yash Maheshwari and the doubles pairing of Sam Beiter and Jack Dillon won three-set matches for the visiting Lancers (2-1 NFL).
Barker 5.5, Newfane 0
Staying perfect at 3-0, Barker blanked Newfane 5.5-0 Thursday in an N-O tennis match.
Singles wins by Joe Devereax, Zach Smolinsky and Sean Benoit led the way for Barker.
The Raiders also got wins from the doubles teams of Brian Hefferon-Tristan Payne, Mike Schian-Eric Herlan and Zach Tisarski-Enedina Bautista.
