Track Lions sweep Niagara Falls

Sanford is a triple winner for the blue and gold

LOCKPORT —

Brittany Sanford was a triple individual winner on Wednesday, as the Lockport High School boys and girls track teams swept visiting Niagara Falls in the 2014 Niagara Frontier League track and field opener for both schools.
Under sunny skies at Max D. Lederer Field, head coach Miles Patterson’s Lions won, 85-55, while the Lady Lions prevailed, 116-25.
“It was a great early season win for us, but we know we’ve got a lot of work to do,” said LHS assistant coach Rick Pytlik. 
Sanford braved chilly temperatures to win the long jump (15 feet, 6 inches), the 100 high hurdles (:17.5) and the 200 sprint (27.5 seconds) in a superb opening meet performance.
Meanwhile, Hannah Kurbs, Rachel Williams and Sarah Yensan were all double individual winners for the blue and gold. Kurbs won the 800 in 2:36 and the 1,500 in 5:20.7; while Williams placed first in both the shot put (32 feet, 8 inches); and discus (80 feet, 4 inches); and Yensan in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches) and triple jump (31 feet, 7 inches).
Other individual winners for the Lady Lions were Abbey Lang (3,200) and Kristen Sawyer (pole vault). 
Lockport’s girls swept the relays with J’Vonna Clarke, Kailyn Szymanski, Elexis Hamilton and Allie Greene winning the 400 relay in 54 seconds flat, Lang, Kurbs, Sanford and Kailyn Szymanski won the 1,600 relay in 4:27.4; and Lang, Shannon Galley, Lindsey Ellis and Brenda Bartkowiak won the 3,200 relay in 11:33.
Shawnnteona Spires (100, 400) was a double winner for the Lady Wolverines. Holly Fiore of the Falls won the girls 400 intermediate hurdles.
Meanwhile, Maurice Channer was a double winner for the Lockport boys, winning the 110 high hurdles in 16.2 seconds and the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 10 inches.
Other individual winners for the Lions were John Britt (3,200), Khalil James (200), Jonah Ribbeck (triple jump), Alex Krest (shot put), Marcelus Hinton (discus); and Jeff Wojcinski (pole vault).
Lockport’s Dan Jones, Scott Anderson, Treston White and Brendan Sanders won the boys 1,600 relay in 3:46; while Jones, Mike Johnston, Adam Perilli and Dez Orsolits won the 3,200 relay in 9:01.
