Laubacker sparks VI team to title

Lockport senior rolls 235-638 in afternoon session.

WAVERLY, N.Y. — Lockport senior Tyler Laubacker capped off a brilliant Lions bowling career by leading the Section VI Boys Bowling Team to it’s second New York State title in four years on Saturday at the Valley Bowling Center.

Section VI’s six-game total of 6,372 was enough to claim its first championship since 2009.

After bowling a 227-586 in the morning session, Laubacker fired a 235-638 in the afternoon. He was coached at the tournament by Marion Singleton (Lockport) and Bill Rodgers (Niagara Falls).

In mid-February, Laubacker bowled a six-game 1,242 at Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga to edge defending Section VI champion Eric Michalski of Amherst by six pins for the overall VI individual championship. Besides Laubacker, others on the Section VI team are Michalski, Chad Mee of Frontier, Andrew Herbert of Eden, Ryan Shane of Silver Creek and Chris Gable of Lackawanna.

Laubacker and fellow LHS captain Jacob Swartz both averaged 210-plus this past Niagara Frontier League season for the Lions, who finished fourth overall at sectionals and second in Class A.

Meanwhile, the Section VI Girls Bowling Team earned a second-place finish at states on Saturday with a 5,790 pin total. Section XI won the title with 5,883 pins.

Ashley Fries of Kenmore West won a gold medal with a 242, high single game during her 531 series in the afternoon. Fries also garnered the Sportsmanship Award for Section VI.

Hannah Mosher of North Tonawanda rolled a 227-596, finishing with five straight strikes.

The girls were coached by Bill Rohring (NT) and Joe Hannon (Maryvale).

Lockport’s girls team placed 14th at sectionals, led by junior Brittany Wright’s 13th place individual finish with a 1,060 pin total. The high girls’ series was a 1,169 by Fries.
