Lockport spikers sweep Niagara Falls

Whalen's Lions, Lockie's Lady Lions both win in straight sets.

LOCKPORT —

The Lockport Lions spiked visiting Niagara Falls in straight sets on Tuesday to open its highly-anticipated 2013 Niagara Frontier League boys volleyball season.
The scores were 25-7, 25-13, 25-20.
“I thought our first team played very well,” said Lions head coach Joe Whalen, who substituted heavily throughout, especially after winning the first game easily.
“I also thought our substitutes played well. I was a little disappointed at the missed serves in the last game. We were a little sloppy there at the end, but overall, I thought they did what I wanted them to.”
It was a short night for Lions junior outside hitter Brad Schneider, but he made the most of it in his only game to open the match, serving seven straight points and finishing with 11, including two aces as LHS ran away with the first game from the start.
“We could have played better, but our level was taken down a little tonight,” said Schneider, who is recognized as one of the best volleyball players in the area.
Seniors Ryan Guyton and Shawn Moore and junior skyscraper Jason Donorovich all had spiking kills for Lockport in the first game, while seniors Jonah Ribbeck and Jack Whalen served solidly.
“I thought we did a good job tonight. It wasn’t our best effort, but we played our game and it was a good start to the season for us,” Jack Whalen said.
LHS junior Tyler Goodrich had back-to-back kills and in game two and finished with four in the game, including the final point. Seniors John Traversone and Bryan Wojcinski also served well in the middle game. Senior Eamon Yates and Donorovich had aces.
Game three was a bit sloppy, but Traversone served up a couple more aces and Moore earned six kills, two blocks and an ace as the Lions cruised.
