Dry out of control

Lockport sophomore continues her goal-scoring tear

LOCKPORT —

Ten goals in her first four games apparently wasn’t enough for Lockport High School sophomore Gretta Dry, who recorded three more tallies Wednesday in the Lady Lions’ 3-1 victory over visiting North Tonawanda, topping Niagara Frontier League girls soccer action.
“Gretta’s a smart player and like I’ve said she just makes the most of her opportunities,” said LHS head coach Mike Finnerty, as his defending league championship team improved to 3-0 in the NFL and are 5-0 overall.
“I give credit to NT today. They had the better of the play. They really came out ready to play today. We just made the most of our opportunities,” Finnerty said.
Head coach Steve Sabo’s injury-riddled Lady Lumberjacks (1-2 NFL, 2-2 overall) thoroughly dominated the action in the first half, but found themselves trailing 2-0 at intermission on a penalty kick goal by Dry and another tally.
“We dominated them. They had just two shots on net in the first half, but they both went in,” Sabo said. “We controlled the majority of play and had 73 minutes of total possession time in their end today, but in the end, what counts is what’s on the scoreboard.”
Sabo said he considered the call that resulted in Lockport’s early PK, “questionable,” but Dry made no mistake, recording her 11th goal. Dry later added her 12th and 13th goals in just five games.
“On the penalty kicks, I look where I want to go and just go there,” Dry said. “I just think it’s been a team effort all season for me. It starts with the defense and it works its way up to me. I work hard and just kick them in.”
NT junior Danielle DalPorto cut the LHS in half, 2-1, but Dry scored an insurance goal for the blue and gold.
