LHS's Lang takes a title in NFL Cross Country

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Strong finishes by Lockport High School runners helped the Lions claim first place overall in the boys’ and girls’ races at the Niagara Frontier League Cross Country Championships, held Saturday at Beaver Island State Park in Grand Island.

Abbey Lang, a junior, won the individual girls’ championship, crossing the finish line in 20:12.1. Her classmate, Hannah Kurbs, finished three seconds behind to claim second place while Lew-Port’s Amber Custodi took third place with her time of 21:18.2. Lockport’s Sarah Kurbs placed fourth at 21:26.1, with Kenmore West’s Frankie Mercado rounding out the top five of 51 competitors with her time of 21:26.1.

Niagara Fall High School’s Anthony Hawthorne was the boys’ individual champion, finishing the race with a time of 17:17.4. His teammate, Donny McCoy, finished fifth overall among the boys with a time of 18 minutes even. 

Finishing in between them were all Lockport runners, with Connor Doran (17:32.3), Mitch Loicano (17:44.4) and Dan Jones (17:49.2) coming in at second, third and fourth place, respectively. It was the overall strong showing of Lockport runners that helped them clinch first place as a team with an overall score of 24 points. Grand Island finished second in the boys’ race at 64 points with Niagara Falls taking third with 71 points. Rounding out the remaining schools, in order of finish, were Niagara-Wheatfield (120 pts.), Lew-Port (141), Kenmore West (171), Kenmore East (174) and North Tonawanda (194).

With seven runners finishing among the top 20, Lockport’s girls also placed first as a team with 28 points. Lew-Port finished second overall with 62 points, followed by Kenmore West in third place with 83 points. The rest of the field finished as follows: Niagara-Wheatfield (96), Grand Island (102), Niagara Falls (151), North Tonawanda (203), Kenmore East (Inc).

Spartan boys & girls finish second overall in ECIC

Starpoint High School’s boys and girls both finished in second place in their respective divisions at the ECIC Cross Country Championships at Alden High School on Saturday. The boys finished with 48 points in Division 2, 33 points behind division winners Sweet Home. Overall, the boys team placed seventh.
