Swim Lions dunk the Falls

R-H boys, Newfane girls clinch at least tie for respective N-O titles

LOCKPORT —

Juniors Scott Guyton, Shawn Moore and Derek Secord did everything but fix the scoreboard on Tuesday, sparking the Lockport swim Lions past visiting Niagara Falls, 102-72, topping Niagara Frontier League action.
Elsewhere, extending their Niagara-Orleans League reigns, both the defending champion Royalton-Hartland boys and Newfane girls teams clinched at least a tie for their respective league swim championships with victories on Tuesday. Closing out a strong day for local swim teams, Sparpoint beat visiting Sweet Home in ECIC boys pool action.
Guyton splashed his way to victory in both the 200-yard individual medley (2:17.74) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.35), Moore took both the 200 freestyle (2:01.35) and 100 backstroke (1:05.19); and Secord touched first in both the 50 freestyle (:22.55) and the 100 freestyle (:50.99) as head coach John Sullivan’s young, but impressive
Lockport Lions improved to 11-1 in the NFL and 11-2 overall.
“It was a steady win for us tonight,” Sullivan said. “We talked about making this a challenging place for opposing teams to come in and swim and they did that tonight. Our focus is improving night to night and if we can continue to do that, the rest of the plan will start to fall into place.”
Guyton was dominating in his two victories, just as he has been all season, taking big early leads then cruising. “I want to be able to get down to 56, 57 secondsby the end of the season,” Guyton said. “My goal is to make a state qualifying time. As a team, we’re doing a lot better than we thought we would. We have a chance to win the league, when we thought that would have to wait. We’re in the hunt.”
Moore, an LHS volleyball standout, uses every inch of his 6-6 frame to his advantage, getting early leads off the block, then is difficult to catch when he gets into cruise control. “I’d been struggling in the 200 free mentality, but tonight I just did what I needed to do,” Moore said. “I’m getting there. I’ve been working hard in practice and it’s been paying off for me.”
