LHS gridders dance the night away at special prom

Lockport teens serve as dates for Roswell patients.

LOCKPORT —

Try teaching an average high school student-athlete who broke his leg during football season, then his jaw during baseball season how lucky he is compared to others and he might not really understand.
But you can ask Lockport High School junior David DiTullio and nine other members of the Lions football program about their trials and tribulations and they’ll tell you how blessed they all are — especially when compared to others their own age stricken with cancer who dream the same dreams and share their same life’s ambitions.
When Lions’ assistant grid coach Brendan Brady sent out a call to any players interested in being dates for a special prom put together by Roswell Park Cancer Institute, DiTullio, who said he thought he’d suffered a tough sports season, signed up, along with LHS classmates Andrew Bronson, AJ Rivera, DeAndre Jenkins, Javon Jenkins, Zack Miles, Malik Harden, Stephen Yaremo, Frank Allen and Lewis Patterson.
DiTullio’s father, David, said, “My son came home and said, ‘Dad I’m going to the prom on Friday.’ My response was, ‘What prom?’ He told me, ‘Ten of us signed up for to go to the Roswell Prom for teenage girls with cancer and give them a fulfilled night.’
“Ten young men chose to do a very special thing for some of those less fortunate. We always have negative things to say about our local teenagers, but never the good.  What coach Brady taught these boys goes way beyond football. This is a life’s lesson and something they’ll remember the rest of their lives.”
The 10 LHS football players took a school bus to Roswell Park. There, they had two limousines waiting and the young men in tuxedos presented corsages to and escorted almost 30 patients from the hospital to the Hotel Lafayette Courtyard Room in downtown Buffalo, where they ate and danced the night away.
