GASPORT — A fire that broke out shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday caused extensive damage to a house at 7594 Chestnut Ridge Road near Cottage Road.
There were no injuries, according to Niagara County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Elliott.
Five volunteer fire companies responded, and traffic was closed on Chestnut Ridge Road for about three hours between Cottage and Hollenbeck Roads.
Everyone escaped safely from the two-family house, which is owned by Susan Varette. Colleen Allee, her 6-year-old daughter and John Vekich were in the house when the fire apparently started in the rear upper deck.
There was no estimate of damage available, and the cause is under investigation, officials said.
Firefighters from Terry’s Corners, Wrights Corners, Wolcottsville, Gasport and South Lockport companies responded. Tri-County Ambulance, National Grid and the Red Cross were called to the scene. Rapids Fire Co. and Middleport Fire Co. were on standby.
The call came in at 6:28 p.m., and firefighters were clearing equipment at 9:30 p.m.
