GASPORT— There are a lot of farms within 100 miles of Becker Farms and Vizcarra Vineyards on Quaker Road in Gasport.
With so many local food producers nearby, Becker Farms and Vizcarra Vineyards had an idea to have a special meal served prepared using only local products. The event — to be held at different times throughout the summer and fall — would be a five-course, sit-down meal using food from local farms paired with a Vizcarra wine.
“Agriculture is the No. 1 industry in the state of New York,” Owner Oscar Vizcarra said. “But 2 percent of the population grows food and vegetables for out of the state, the country and the rest of the world. So we need to remind our communities how important agriculture is.”
Becker Farms and Vizcarra Vineyards introduced its “100 Mile Radius Meals” series Thursday at a special tasting held at the vineyard’s courtyard. The meal series was created in an effort to increase consumer interest in local agriculture. The program highlights seasonal meals featuring farm fresh fruits, vegetables and other agricultural products from across Western New York or within 100 miles of Becker Farms.
Betsey McKenna, the current Niagara Orleans Dairy Princess, said using local products was a healthy choice. Local produce is fresher, because there is no need for preservatives, which keeps the product from spoiling during transportation. On average food travels about 1,500 miles to reach a person’s plate, McKenna said. Buying local reduces preservatives and air pollution with less transportation.
“Buy local, buy life,” McKenna said. “Local food is bred for taste, not for transportation.”
Amanda Vizcarra, Becker Farms and Vizcarra Vineyards catering manager and events coordinator, told a story about her family picking strawberries. The whole family would take part in the picking of the berries, which would then be enjoyed throughout the year. But it was the memories that would last even longer. The enjoyment of being on the farm and consuming local was the inspiration behind the 100 Mile Radius Meals.
“We have events scattered throughout the summer that celebrate the coming of each harvest season,” Vizcarra said.
The 100 Mile Radius Meals will take place throughout the summer on June 12, July 16 and 26; Aug. 16 and 29; and Sept. 11 and 12. Seating dates are by reservations only, and can be arranged by going to beckerfarms.com or calling 772-2211.
Earlier in the year, Becker Farms and Vizcarra Vineyards won a U.S. Small Business Administration award, the SBA Jeffrey Butland Family Owned Business Award. The farm was founded in 1894, taken over by the Vizcarras in 1980 and employs about 60 locals.
