COLLISION: Mercy Flight transports two after rollover crash

MIDDLEPORT — Three people were taken to the Erie County Medical Center after a collision at Carmen and Rochester roads Wednesday.

Middleport police said a car driven by 24-year-old Melissa Adams of Gasport may have run the stop sign while traveling north toward the intersection.

Adams’ red Chevrolet reportedly struck a tan Plymouth Breeze, driven by Paul Allen of East Aurora, in the intersection.

The impact sent Allen’s car into the ditch, while Adams’ car flipped over several times and landed on its side in the parking lot of the Kip Garris Auction House.

The Middleport Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene, assisted by Tri-Town Ambulance and Rural Metro. Gasport and Hartland fire police assisted by shutting down portions of Rochester Road.

Two Mercy Flight helicopters were called to the scene to transport Adams and 57-year-old Carolyn Allen, a passenger in the tan car, to ECMC.

Middleport Police Chief John Swick said both patients were stable when they were loaded in the helicopters.

Paul Allen was transported by Rural Metro ambulance to ECMC. Swick said he was “walking around” at the scene, but was taken in for evaluation.

Middleport Fire Chief Steve Cooley said crews used the Jaws of Life to extract Adams from her car.

Kip Garris, the owner of the auction house on the corner, said he heard the accident and came outside to find a scary scene.

He said the intersection has seen several high-speed collisions.

“We should have a stoplight, or a flashing light or something,” Garris said. “They’ll wait until someone gets killed before they do it.”

Cooley said his fire crews have responded to several accidents there.

“It’s a notorious intersection,” he said. “The last couple (accidents), we’ve lucked out.”
