Sheriff’s deputies responded to Ide Road in Wilson on Wednesday for a report that someone damaged the “Welcome to Wilson” sign.
A town employee told deputies the sign appeared to have been damaged by an ax.
The sign had marks on it from an ax, and the bottom half was broken off, the report said.
Deputies reportedly found the head of a pick ax in a ditch near the sign.
The employee told deputies there have been ongoing problems with town signs being damaged.
Damage to the sign was estimated at $1,600, the report said.
