The New York State Police will be on high alert this holiday weekend for drivers who are intoxicated.
Today through Monday, troopers statewide are participating in an Independence Day Traffic Safety Initiative.
Patrols will be on the lookout for impaired drivers, as well as speeding and seat-belt violations, Major Christopher L. Cummings, Commander of Troop A, said in a news release.
“We have a commitment to protect all who are traveling on the highways this holiday weekend,” Cummings said. “If you are caught drinking and driving you will be arrested; we will not tolerate irresponsible driving behavior that puts others in danger.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, during the July 4 holiday period in 2007, there were 200 traffic-related fatalities statewide. Out of that number, 44 percent involved drivers who were intoxicated.
The initiative will include sobriety checkpoints and roving DWI patrols.
