SANBORN — More than 60 properties were auctioned off by the county Saturday at Niagara County Community College, earning more than an $10,000 average.

The county raised $674,250, according to Treasurer David Broderick. “We had a very successful sale,” Broderick said. “We started out with 80 and we had a number of property owners able to come up with the money to protect their

property.”

One of the largest bids was for $194,000 for 26 acres of vacant land at 6545 South Transit Road near Auto City. A Lockport man was the highest bidder for that property.

There were over 200 registered bidders, some coming for Pennsylvania and Ontario. “They came from all over again,” Broderick said. “We had a lot of interest in the property.”

Several properties in low income areas of Niagara Falls went for about $5,000 each. A house at 1868 Niagara Avenue was auctioned for $4,600. About 20 delinquent taxpayers were able to save their property.

A run down house at 7126 Fieldcrest Drive behind the Boy Scout Headquarters on Route 31 was sold for $60,000. A house on Escarpment got a $61,000 bid. A house at 15 Stacy Road in Ransomville raised $44,000.

“We get a lot of redemption,” the treasurer said. “We encourage that. We do work with them.”

The auction has become an annual event. Last year, about 100 properties were auctioned.
