POLICE: Sheriff's department, Lockport police win AAA traffic safety awards

Keeping the roads safe is the job of area police departments, as well as a goal of the AAA.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office won gold and the Lockport Police Department won silver Tuesday when the AAA singled out those police agencies it deemed the most successful in achieving their mutual goal of traffic safety.

Also winning the Traffic Safety Silver Award were the Middleport and Medina police departments; winning bronze were the Holley and Barker departments.

AAA regional Manager Lynette Dickinson handed out the kudos to exemplary police agencies in Niagara and Orleans counties at the AAA’s annual award luncheon. The ceremony took place at the Basket Factory restaurant in Middleport.

Police agreed that awards come to those departments that stand out in their county by striving to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents and possible fatalities through teaching and enforcing traffic safety.

“On a regular basis, we check the safety of driving habits,” said Middleport Police Chief John J. Swick. This includes seat belt checks and enforcement of laws on speed and driving while intoxicated, as well as school zone and bike safety, Swick said.
