Roy-Hart begins search

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — MIDDLEPORT –– Royalton-Hartland has taken the first step toward finding a new superintendent. Tuesday night Board of Education members appointed Clark Godshall, the Orleans/Niagara BOCES superintendent, as superintendent search consultant.

The district is searching for a successor to Superintendent Kevin MacDonald, who said last week he would be leaving the district at the end of June. On July 1, pending contract talks, MacDonald will become the next superintendent of the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership, that region’s Board of Cooperative Educational Services. Twenty-two school districts are serviced by Genesee Valley.

The Genesee Valley Educational Partnership Board is expected to appoint MacDonald at its next meeting tonight. MacDonald has been Roy-Hart’s superintendent since February 2009.

“We’re very excited for Kevin, but it’s sad to see him go,” said Board President Patricia Riegle. “In the short time he was here, there was a lot accomplished.”

Four years ago when Roy-Hart was looking for a successor to retiring Superintendent Paul Bona, Godshall was brought in to run that search, which led to the hiring of MacDonald. That search cost the district a total of $800, most of which came from printing and mailing expenses.

Godshall to oversee the search comes at no cost to the district, unless incidental costs pop up. That would include brining in a candidate from out of town.

There would be few if any printing or mailing expenses, Godshall said. Much of the process is done online.

This will be Godshall’s 49th superintendent search. He recently ran a search in Newfane a couple of years ago, before Christine J. Tibbetts was hired.

Board of Education members will be making a decision on whether or not to use an interim superintendent. Godshall said to find a new superintendent might take as long as a few months, putting arrival of the new leader sometime in the fall.

Riegle said Roy-Hart had plenty of qualified administrators to fill an interim position. Some may even be candidates, she said.

Schools are finding superintendents from a very small pool of candidates these days, Godshall said. On average, a district may receive five to 10 applicants.
