Leaf pickup starting next week

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The City of Lockport will launch its annual fall leaf pickup program the week of Oct. 22.

Residents are asked to rake leaves loose into piles, on the street against the curb. Yard waste such as plants, prunings, trimmings and organic mulch can be added to the piles — but pumpkins should not be.

“We’re saving the leaves now to make topsoil, and we’d rather not have pumpkins growing in it next year,” Norm Allen, public works director, said.

Leaf pickup will be ongoing for at least a month and crews will head out randomly to wherever leaf fall is heaviest, Allen said. Unlike other special pickups, it will not follow refuse collection days.
