Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Lockport Mayor Michael W. Tucker will resign effective today.

Tucker confirmed to a Union-Sun & Journal reporter this afternoon that today would be his last day. He's served as mayor since 2004, serving previously as an alderman.

Tucker will also leave his position with the Niagara County Industrial Development Agency, where he was serving as interim chairman.

In a prepared statement, Tucker said he is leaving for a job in the private sector. Pursuing such "exciting private sector employment opportunities" requires Tucker to resign his office, he said.

"During my time in office, Lockport has certainly had its share of challenges. As my time comes to a close, I have nothing but fond memories of my time in office," Tucker said.

It's believed Common Council President Anne E. McCaffrey will handle the mayor's duties for the time being.
