Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The winter storm warning for 2 a.m. Wednesday through 2 a.m. Thursday has been upgraded to a blizzard warning.

The National Weather Service of Buffalo warns that the highest threat for blizzard conditions exists from late morning on Wednesday to Wednesday evening.

Heavy and blowing snow is expected, which will result in periods of whiteout conditions along with significant blowing and drifting of snow.

Accumulations are expected of less than an inch overnight, six to 11 inches Wednesday and three to six inches Wednesday night, leading to storm totals of nine to 17 inches. Winds of 20 to 30 m.p.h. are expected with gusts up to 45 m.p.h.

Visibility is expected to be near zero at times from late Wednesday morning to Wednesday evening.

Lockport, Wilson, Barker, Newfane, and Royalton-Hartland schools are closed for Wednesday, as well as Niagara County offices except for essential personnel.

NWS Buffalo warns that conditions will rapidly deteriorate Wednesday morning, making travel extremely dangerous. If you absolutely must travel, have a winter survival kit with you, and stay with your vehicle if you get stranded.
