Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — An arrest has been made after an investigation into a significant amount of missing money from a food pantry in Newfane, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office said.
Ofelia Carmona, 53, Appleton, was charged with first-degree scheme to defraud, an “E” felony, and third-degree grand larceny, a “D” felony. The charges stem from an investigation into missing funds from the Migrant Ministry Food Pantry, which is located at the First Baptist Church in Newfane. The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Bureau conducted the investigation.
Carmona, who is a former director of the pantry, was in charge of managing funds for the pantry. She was arraigned at the Town of Newfane Court by Justice Bruce Barnes and released on her own recognizance. She is due back in Newfane Town Court on April 8.
