Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The Newfane man who was killed after he fell from a tree on Monday has been identified as Donald E. Geist, 52.
The Niagara County Sheriff's office is still looking into the circumstances surrounding Geist's apparent accidental death.
The sheriff's dispatch unit fielded a call about Geist's fall around 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Geist reportedly had gone into the woods east of Coomer Road to set up a tree stand for hunting. When he didn't return after several hours, two friends said they went out into the woods to look for the him, and found him lying at the base of a tree severely injured.
Geist was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. County dispatchers had used GPS tracking from the cell phone to direct sheriff's deputies and firefighters from the Miller Hose and Wrights Corners companies to the scene.
