Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The investigation of a Newfane man’s fatal fall has been closed, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
Authorities said Donald E. Geist, 52, found Monday dead at the base of a tree under a stand he had set up in the tree for hunting.
The Sheriff’s Office said dispatchers received a 911 call from a cellphone at about 7:30 p.m. about a man having fallen from a tree in the woods east of Coomer Road.
Geist reportedly had gone into the woods east of Coomer Road to set up a tree stand for hunting. When he didn’t return after several hours, two friends said they went out into the woods to look for the man, and found him lying at the base of a tree severely injured.
The friends called 911. Emergency responders used a GPS signal from the cell phone to direct sheriff’s deputies and firefighters from Miller Hose and Wrights Corners to the accident scene in the woods.
Geist was pronounced dead at the scene.
Geist was the meat manager for Budwey’s Market in Newfane and a member of the Ridgewood Bible Church, where he was a leader of the Boys Brigade. He was also a member of the North American Hunting Club. He is survived by his wife Karen, two children and a grandchild.
