Scoring with style

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Earlier this month, a Lockport woman was one of two winners selected in the American Express and NBA “Off the Court Style Challenge.”

In March, Sherrell McLean, 22, a graduate student studying social work at the University of Buffalo, won round trip tickets to Boston, court side seats for a Celtics game, and more when she was named a winner.

This is the first year for the contest, which is part of AmEx and NBA’s “Off the Court” program, Alex Stathis of PMK-BNC, a company which handles public relations for AmEx said.

The program features a video series of NBA players sharing their off-duty passions and inviting fans to demonstrate their own for the chance to win tickets and meet and greets with players.

McLean answered some questions about her exciting win.

QUESTION: How did you hear about the contest?

ANSWER: I follow [Boston Celtics All-Star point guard] Rajon Rondo on Twitter. He was featured in the first “Off the Court” video talking about his love of fashion, so he posted about the challenge on Twitter. The challenge was to submit your court side look that stands out. I saw that only a few people had entered so I decided to submit one.

Q: How did you find out that you’d won?

A: They emailed me a few weeks later telling me that I’d won, and at first I thought it was fake! But when I realized it was the real thing, I was running around the house yelling, and I posted about it on all my social media accounts. I was so excited.

Q: What did you win?

A: Two round-trip tickets to Boston, a stay at the W Boston Hotel, we got to play on the parquet where the Celtics play, we had a meet and greet with Boston Celtics legend Cedric Maxwell, we met Rajon Rondo, went to dinner and had court side seats at the game. There was a lot involved.
