Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — BARKER — For Lindsey Brown and Meghan Menz, their plans for the fall will have them attend schools that are vastly different than what they’re used to at Barker.

Brown, 18, the valedictorian of Barker High School’s graduating class of 2013, will attend D’Youville College in Buffalo, which has 3,200 students. Menz, 17, the salutatorian, will attend Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fla., a school with a total of 34,000 students worldwide.

The smaller school community is one of the things both say they will miss about their time on Quaker Road.

”The small class sizes,” Menz said.

”The close relationship with the teachers and our friends,” Brown said.

Menz will study aerospace engineering at Embry Riddle, while Brown will study to become a physician’s assistant at D’Youville. For Menz, the choice was influenced by her interest in airplanes, as well as math and science.

Brown said her little sister was born premature about eight years ago. Spending four months in the hospital, meeting the doctors and seeing them in action inspired Brown to get into the medical field.

While at Barker, Brown and Menz played field hockey and participated with the school’s video club, student council and National Honor Society chapter. Brown also played tennis and Menz was involved with AFS, varsity club, swimming and track.

Both Menz and Brown have advice for those who will be starting high school in the fall.

”Always set goals for yourself,” Menz said.

”Don’t slack off, these are your most important years, they’re going to tell how you’ll go through college,” Brown said.

Barker’s graduation ceremony will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Herbert Ludwig Fine Arts Hall, 1628 Quaker Road.
