Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — An emergency drill will be held June 24 at Lockport High School, involving the city fire and police departments, Eastern Niagara Hospital and the Lockport City School District.
The drill is expected to start around 9 a.m. and be completed possibly by 11 a.m., although it’s unknown how long the drill will actually run.
Superintendent Michelle T. Bradley said after the Newtown, Conn. shootings in December, Lockport City Schools wanted to review all of its security policies and procedures. While reviewing safety plans district officials thought a drill was needed, as it’s been awhile since the district last did one with city police, Bradley said.
“We did one about five years ago, we felt it was time,” she said.
Lt. Todd Chenez of the Lockport Police Department said the purpose of the drill is to see how the agencies work together in a crisis.
“We need to do this and make sure things run smoothly,” he said. “The drill is to make sure each agency knows what the other is doing.”
For the duration of the drill, Lincoln Avenue will be shut down from Pine Street to Beattie Avenue, with the road also closed off at Euclid Avenue. Locust Street will be closed from Willow Street to Dorchester Road. Harding Avenue, which runs from Locust to Beattie, will be closed off at Euclid. A staging area and triage center will be set up at the Kenan Center while a command center will be set up near the high school.
While the goal is to make the drill as real as possible, Chenez said local traffic will be permitted to pass through. In a real emergency, those roads would be completely shut down for everyone.
“In no way do we want to inconvenience those who live around there,” Chenez said.
No students will be in the building, but 10 kids or so will be assisting in the drill, Bradley said. It will also be the last day of work for the high school faculty and staff, who will have an opportunity for training on how to handle a serious event, the superintendent said.ROADS CLOSED OFF Local traffic will be allowed to pass through, otherwise the following streets will be closed • Lincoln Avenue from Pine Street to Beattie Avenue • Locust Street from Willow Street to Dorchester Road • Harding Avenue at Euclid Avenue Contact reporter Joe Olenick at 439-9222, ext. 6241 or follow him on Twitter @joeolenick.
