Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Elizabeth Koplas has one word to describe what she’ll miss about Starpoint High School.
Koplas and Matthew Stein are this year’s valedictorian and salutatorian. The two found out about their final class ranking together sometime in late February and early March. In fact, they weren’t the only ones in the room with something to celebrate.
”Nine of the top ten were all in one homeroom, so we were all there for each other,” Koplas said.
Koplas, 18, will be attending Brown University in the fall, majoring in either chemistry or chemical engineering. Koplas said she enjoys chemistry because of its organization and versatility. At Starpoint, Koplas took classes such as Advanced Placement Chemistry, which furthered her interest in the field.
“Chemistry is endlessy applicable,” she said. “I can do anything with it, because everything in life is chemistry. I just find it fun.”
Stein, 17, will be attending the University of Rochester, studying biomedical engineering.
”I’ve always been interested in biology, math and problem solving,” Stein said. “I think it’s a great way to help people out.”
While at Starpoint, Stein was on the cross country and track teams. He was also a member of the wind ensemble, pit and jazz band, playing alto saxophone. Music is another of Stein’s interest, as he also plays in a rock band with friends.
Koplas was on the school paper, Science Olympiad, student council and was an all-State chorus member. She was also a member of the varsity volleyball team for three years and a member of the school’s Link crew, a group of students that help incoming freshmen adapt to high school.
Both Koplas and Stein are members of the Math, Science and National Honor societies.
Even with that much going on, Koplas and Stein will miss their teachers and friends the most. Spending so much time together, for so many years, draws the class together, Koplas said.
Graduation is 7 p.m. Friday at the Starpoint High School auditorium.Contact reporter Joe Olenick at 439-9222, ext. 6241 or follow him on Twitter @joeolenick.
