Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Tops Markets is the first grocery retailer in the country to offer shoppers a new option when it comes to adding omega-3 fatty acids to their diets.

After 10 years of research and development, NBO3 Technologies is introducing to the market GreatO Premium Ground Beef. GreatO is the first and only USDA-labeled ground beef product naturally abundant in omega-3 fatty acids, while keeping the rich flavor and taste of regular ground beef. GreatO Premium Meats are now available exclusively at Tops Markets chain-wide in 1-pound packages.

“We are thrilled to partner with GreatO to bring this truly innovative product to Tops customers first,” Jim Lane, Tops Markets’ director of meat and seafood, said in a statement. “We are always looking for ways to help our customers make more nutritious choices and GreatO ground beef will be an ideal way for families to incorporate those good nutrients into their weekly meals.”

NBO3 Technologies worked with the Kansas State University Animal Sciences and Industry department for more than 10 years to create and bring to market GreatO Premium Ground Beef and other products.

“For over a decade we have been working on revolutionizing how to not only make products that are healthier for consumers, but in turn make the animals healthier. And yes, we are offering beef with naturally abundant omega-3 fatty acids by feeding animals an omega-3 rich diet. We are truly making every bite count for the animals and for humans, alike,” said Todd Hansen, CEO of NBO3 Technologies. “The relationship between NBO3 and Kansas State University is a model example of academic and commercial collaboration to develop and take to market beneficial improvements for both industry and consumers.”

Recent research shows a majority of consumers are interested in buying food products that contribute to health management, Tops said.

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish and plant oils. The U.S. currently does not have a recommended daily intake of omega-3s, though many doctors and nutritionists recommend between 1,200-1,600 milligrams daily, depending on a person’s age and health. The health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids are widely known—they can boost heart health and lower triglycerides and may help with rheumatoid arthritis and depression, Tops said.

GreatO Premium Beef contains healthy omega-3s because of the feed that the animals are given. Great03 Premium Feed delivers a diet naturally rich in healthy omega-3 fatty acids derived from healthy oilseeds and other natural whole grains high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids.

Cattle perform more efficiently and require little to no antibiotics (therapeutic or sub-therapeutic) versus traditional commodity beef. The majority of validating research was conducted in conjunction with Kansas State University, which is known for its expertise in beef cattle nutrition.
